What's the difference between a pink slip and a blue slip?
A pink slip is a safety inspection report required in NSW when renewing registration for vehicles over five years old. It confirms your car is roadworthy. A blue slip is a more thorough inspection needed when a vehicle is unregistered, has been brought in from interstate, or has had registration expire for over three months. Blue slips also include identity and compliance checks. Both ensure your vehicle meets road safety standards before being registered or re-registered.
Can I drive my car to get a blue slip if it's unregistered?
Yes, but you’ll need an Unregistered Vehicle Permit (UVP) from your local roads authority before driving an unregistered vehicle to a blue slip inspection. This permit covers your travel for inspection, repairs, or registration. Without a UVP, driving an unregistered vehicle is illegal and can result in fines or loss of insurance coverage. Always arrange a permit beforehand to stay safe and compliant.
What happens if my car fails the rego check?
If your vehicle fails a pink or blue slip inspection, you’ll be given a report outlining the items that need fixing. For pink slips, you usually have 14 days to complete the repairs and return for a free reinspection. If the timeframe is exceeded, a full inspection and fee may apply again. With blue slips, the process is stricter, and you may need to restart the inspection entirely if major issues are found. In either case, fixing problems early can save time and stress.
